In Pursuit of Human Creativity

I feel like I’ve gone through some phases this year of really struggling to express myself creatively. I went through phases of video making, photography, trying to blog (not very successfully as evidenced by no posts since April), and just this week I decided to buy a ukulele. I think the root of all of this is that we, as humans, have an innate need to output some form of creative work. Every time I picked up one of these hobbies, it had a drastic effect on my mental health and I don’t think that is a coincidence. Humans want (need) to be creative and doing so makes you happy. Even if you ultimately do almost nothing with it I encourage anyone reading this (Not sure how you found my weird random blog) to go try and do something, anything creative. We live in a messed up world right now and need more people to make any form of art about their feelings. We spend so much time doom-scrolling through social media and news feeds and stressing ourselves out about the state of the world, and it’s not good for us.

I’m not saying that the craziness of the world isn’t important to be paying attention to but there’s only so much (so little) that is in your direct control. You can control your own happiness, at least a little bit by starting a consistent creative output. Please, for your own sake, GO DO SOMETHING CREATIVE.

I’ll leave you with some inspiration in the form of my YouTube Playlist I’ve started curating that I’ve been call “Very important videos” These are videos that have genuinely influenced my world view in the last year and I’ll keep adding to it as I discover more video. Pick just a couple out of there, get some inspiration, and go do something away from the internet for a while. Maybe you’ll discover something about yourself. I know I have this year.
